For more than two decades, Dr. Richard Mann has devoted his career to investigating the therapeutic actions and the science associated with benfotiamine, publishing peer-reviewed research, and educating physicians throughout the United States and internationally. Through his publications, lectures, and clinical experience, he has become one of America’s leading authorities on this unique form of vitamin B1.

Two decades ago, in the midst of a long and successful clinical career as a Board-Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Dr. Richard H. Mann encountered a little-known form of vitamin B1 called benfotiamine. Although it had been studied and used throughout Europe and Asia for more than six decades, it remained virtually unknown in American medicine.

Dr. Richard H. Mann’s interest in benfotiamine began when one of his patients experienced remarkable clinical improvement while receiving the nutrient from a physician in Europe. Intrigued, Dr. Mann undertook an extensive review of the scientific literature and began incorporating benfotiamine into his own clinical practice. When used properly, Dr. Mann found benfotiamine to be very helpful to patients suffering from all forms of neuropathy. As his experience grew, he became convinced that benfotiamine was a uniquely safe nutrient with the potential to improve cellular function across a broad range of conditions. The story

The Physician Who Brought Benfotiamine to American Medicine

During a long and successful career as a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Richard H. Mann was introduced to benfotiamine, a little-known form of vitamin B1 (thiamine) that would ultimately change the course of his professional life. Although benfotiamine had been studied and used throughout Europe and Asia for more than sixty years, it remained largely unknown in American medicine.

His introduction to benfotiamine came through one of his own patients, who experienced remarkable clinical improvement after receiving the nutrient from a European physician. Intrigued by both the patient’s response and the extensive scientific literature, Dr. Mann undertook an exhaustive review of the science and, after determining that it was extraordinarily safe and effective, began incorporating benfotiamine into his own clinical practice.

What followed exceeded his expectations. As he treated patients and continued to study the emerging research, he became convinced that benfotiamine was far more than another nutritional supplement. Its profound effects on cellular metabolism and energy production suggested therapeutic potential extending well beyond diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Over time, his clinical observations and scientific investigations led him to explore and publish on additional therapeutic applications across a broad spectrum of neurological and metabolic disorders.

That experience became a twenty-year scientific pursuit.

Since 2009, Dr. Mann has authored many peer-reviewed publications examining benfotiamine’s role in conditions including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Long COVID neurological symptoms. He has lectured extensively to physicians throughout the United States and internationally, helping introduce American clinicians to a nutrient that had long been recognized overseas.

Throughout his work, one biological theme has remained constant: the critical role of thiamine metabolism, cellular energy production, mitochondrial function, and neuronal health in human disease.
